Smoker Info!

So I been using a cheap Masterbuilt electric smoker for years now. It's served its purpose, and has been great..but I'm looking to take my smoking up a notch. I really don't know much about them. Ideally, I'm looking for a smoker/grill combo. Something I could use for burgers, dogs, etc. I've looked up traeger, and pit boss. Not opposed to a pellet type, but again, know nothing about them. I don't have tons of room for it, so looking for something no bigger then a basic BBQ grill. Any insight/info/opinions would be great. Thanks guys.

I'd throw a vote against any sort of smoker/grill combo.  Get a separate smoker and grill.

How much smoking do you plan on doing?  How much effort are you willing to put into smoking?  Do you want to babysit it all day long?  Do you want to make a few adjustments throughout the day?  Do you want to set it and forget it?

So...I vote on a Weber kettle (22" or 26") as a grill and some sort of smoker that fits whatever level of effort you're willing to put into the smoking process. I'm sure we can make some good recommendations for smokers based on your answers

I guess maybe a couple smokes per month, nothing crazy.

As far as babysitting it all day and effort, I'd rather have more of a "set it and forgot it" kinda thing, especially since we just had our first baby.. Between him and work I don't have the time I used to lol. So I guess something easy to use, but hopefully would still provide good results.

Ok.  So offset smokers probably require the most babysitting, then you have your Weber Smoky Mountains which run a little easier, then your barrel-styles (Gateway, Pit Barrel, Bronco Pro) and then the easiest would be the pellet smoker.  I honestly think that for most folks, the pellet smoker is the way to go.  Set it at forget. Some of them actually serve and do a decent job as a grill as well.  Maybe some of the other guys here will chime in about that.

You just contradicted yourself!

Weber kettle is excellent for both direct grilling and low and slow smoking.

Sort of. I love my Weber 26 and think it's the most versatile grill in the world.  It serves as a decent smoker under good weather conditions.  If there is any wind or if it's cold outside, it's a lousy smoker.

I've smoked plenty of meat on my 26, but 99 times out of 100, if I'm smoking something it's going in my Bronco Pro.

Wind is the enemy of any smoker.

We have a 600 pit boss and an 1100 pitboss .

we use the smaller one for smoking normal meals every week .

‘The larger one for bigger stuff , including deer sticks , fish , etc.

The 600 takes up very little space

Yep, get the kettle, add a Slow N Sear to it and you have both a grill, and smoker. Requires some attention but after several times you will get the hang of the vents and it's not too bad.
