2022 Garden Thread

Recommended Posts

I am starting a garden for the first time thus year.  Four 8'x8' raised beds.  I am going to grow tomatoes for my sauces and gravy (yes, it's gravy, jerks), carrots, celery, onions, garlic, cantaloupe, bell peppers, beets, and parsley.  One of the 8'x8' beds is being rented out to a friend of mine (my sharecropper) to grow whatever he wants to grow.

I am starting some of the plants this week and then about every two weeks another kind of plant gets seeded.  Got a grow light and a seed tray.

I also got a pad of graph paper to design the whole thing.  I'm a nerd.  Nerds use graph paper.  And we plan stuff.

I need to get cedar board cut for the raised beds and then order 8 cubic yards of soil to build the whole thing.  As well as fencing.

I also have two peach trees on order to put in the front.

I should be pretty busy this spring.

Smart starting withe the raised beds....you may want a heating mat for the seed trays ......and peaches are tough......cherries or pears are easier........

I got the heating pad. I’m starting them on a table in the living room, so it should be 68F or higher every day.

I’m hoping I got some resilient peach varieties. Fungus will be a challenge, and I’m still reading up on pests.

Raised beds are awesome. With the right soil you can really increase the planting density. And if you go 17" or higher you can get some hugelkultur action going on under the layers of soil which will help provide nutrients for years.

Do you have a specific setup in mind that requires 8x8? I only ask because I have several raised beds and I find that they are better kept to 3-4' wide, max. Leaning over 3-4 feet to reach the center of a raised bed isn't very comfortable.

I got corners that accommodate a 2” x 10” x 8’ board. So the plots will be 8’ x 8’, but 10” deep. I’m going to put them next to each other and then put another board over where they meet so I can walk around the outside and on the boards between them.

If you dont have a" have a hart trap" I have a few if you want one just text me.......Ive caught lots of pests over the years.....possums, groundhogs, rabbits, skunks, squirrels.......some were released , some were dispatched.......last summer caught a rat, he was the most resilient , taking 10 bb shots in a six inch range to kill and the whole time trying to jump through the cage and get me ( or get away )......that was one tough rat.......
