North Carolina - if you could, would you live there? If so, where?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be spending some time down in eastern North Carolina the next 2 years as I make several trips driving up and down to transport daughter to/from college. The university is actually in the general area I have always thought I would want to move to when I retire -- definitely the first place I wanted to scout out when looking for a new home. These trips up and down several times a year for a couple years will give me a chance to scope out different areas, cities, and towns.

We'll be around Greenville but I would want to check out other areas I could drive to - 1 to 2 hours drive wouldn't be a problem. Obviously, I'd be interested in scoping out the hunting and fishing opportunities.

I know some of you are familiar with North Carolina. If you could, would you move down there? And if so, where? (What towns or counties?).

Like any other place nowadays, always good to do at least a 5-mile sweep around the area, see who and what's going on , some of these rascals don't mind traveling a few miles to cause havoc and don't go to Waffle House , Chuckie Cheese, or Golden Corral Buffet, always seems like a rough crowd

I always liked the eastern shore parts, very pleasant,  relaxing plus that's what the wife likes, lol.

I'm easy, as long as I can fish, hunt, then I'm good.   Spent time in Emerald Island and loved it, but wary of big storms.  Maybe inland from that area 5-10 miles in I should be fine.

As I get older and after working outside since highschool,  I really can't stand the cold, that is the main reason along with high property taxes I would move.

Outer banks is nice, but I'm sure the first year I'm there the largest category 5 hurricane to ever hit would show up. Plus, I don't want to drive far to get to huntable woods. Being on the ocean and the rivers that flow from them is nice for fishing and waterfowl, but I also need the woods. That's why I actually like NJ where I am - granted it's flat, but I'm less than an hour away from the ocean in one direction, the Delaware river in the other direction, with a bunch of  WMAs and a state forest in between. If it wasn't so liberal and expensive to live here, I'd have no problems staying.

I know a few people such as a former colleague and also a friend that have said they don't like living in NC any longer because too many people from up north are moving down there.  My buddy made good on his claim of moving out in one year which happened in December.  He lived there for 13 years.
