Plant I.D.

The deer absolutely go crazy for this vine type plant that starts growing in late summer.  It completely covers a small field where I hunt.  The deer are in there every afternoon eating it.  It grows really fast, like that minute/mile stuff.  What is it?

Japanese hop. It’s an invasive weed that comes from CHY-NAH.

Thanks that looks like what it is.  Let me tell you, if you planted this in an overgrown field it would take over the field every summer and every deer in the area would be in there.  The deer just about eat it all, then it comes back again the next year.

Not Common Hops?

No, Japanese hops is correct. Another nightmare invasive. It outcompetes native plants and dies off in the dormant season leaving no roots to hold soils in stream banks which is where we find a lot of it growing here in NJ these days.

For the record, everything is deer food. I can’t think of a single plant they won’t eat in NJ when hungry, native or not.
