Pa. House OKs bill to allow $25 bounty on coyotes

 

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - A bill is advancing in the Pennsylvania Legislature that would authorize the Pennsylvania Game Commission to set a bounty on coyotes.

 

Named the "coyote control incentive program," the bill passed 111-78 in the House on Wednesday. It now heads to the Senate.

 

Under the bill, the Game Commission could pay $25 to any licensed hunter or furtaker for each coyote lawfully killed. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that it would be Pennsylvania's first such bounty on a wild animal in 50 years.

 

State law already allows year-round coyote hunting, and the bill's sponsor, Pike County Rep. Michael Peifer, says he wants to give hunters an extra incentive to reduce the growing numbers of coyotes.

 

Opponent say it could backfire while posing a risk to unleashed dogs and outdoor cats.

I don't know a single hunter that hunts PA that doesn't already shoot every legal yote he or she sees while hunting.  But perhaps more hunters will take up focus on just them instead of shooting them incidentally during other hunting seasons when coyote is also open.

Yeah, adding bounties definitely will increase the hunting pressure on them, no doubt.

I'd rather that I could pick up a free license at the border.  Then I'd be there every weekend when it's warm in their public forests whacking yotes.

 

And you do realize that article is from 2013, right?  Haven't heard much more about it according to the latest Google search.

Predator hunting in Pennsylvania is absolutely huge before they decided to have this bounty.

The mosquito creek coyote hunt starts this Friday and there will over 4000 contestants for that hunt alone.

We will have 6 guys at my camp for this 3 day hunt. Im hoping one of us gets lucky! The hunt runs Friday thru sunday. We will be out there scouting Wednesday and Thursday. About 20" of crusted snow right now.

The prize money is good.  $8000 for first over $7000 for second around $4000 for biggest female.
