Thank you all for the complements. I used Bondo on the steps where it was rotten. That advice came from Roon, it is a pain to work with but it saved me from rebuilding the steps.

Bondo? Only ever used to fix up my little fender benders.Now that's using his noodle. I've been a jack of all trades all my life and master of none.Holy moly who would have thunk it.
