Golfers….my kid keeps hitting to the right….

Recommended Posts

So…we will be playing a round up in cape cod on vacation next week and my boy wanted to play w his cousins and uncles…

he had lessons years ago and knows a bit about the sport…& he is athletic playing travel basketball n HS football

last night at the range he consistently made good contact w the ball but just about every ball went to the same spot…peeling off to the right

the golf pro who we’ve known for years mentioned he may have to “turn over his hands” ….which I tried to instruct him on…to no avail

Any tipsters out there!?!?  Not looking to make him a pro…but told him it’s important to be able to effectively play a round of golf w pals, be able to hang w a future girlfriend’s dad/father in law on the links, or if he gets a career in business to seal the deal during a golf outing w the boss!!

amazingly…my shots were on target all night…we’ll see if that remains true today at Gamblers Ridge!!

I used to play for my HS golf team, and I also was a caddy for a few years at a private course near me. I don’t play much anymore but a couple things I notice:

1. He’s making contact toward the toe of the club instead of the center, this is a guaranteed to make the ball go right.

2. He’s swinging a little bit what we call “over the top” on his downswing. Hard to explain over a web forum lol, but the best I can do is to say he’s got to keep his arms in closer to his body on the downswing, and THEN turn his hands over on the follow through like you mentioned.

I just looked at another vid and I see he’s also standing up taller on his backswing than he is during his pre-swing setup position, which is probably what’s causing him to have to reach his arms farther from his body on the downswing to make up the lost distance from the ball (the “over the top” thing I mentioned earlier).

a good golf swing is like a fixed pendulum. Same way forward as you went back. Lock that left elbow all the way until AFTER you make contact with the ball, then the follow through (again AFTER the ball is hit) is the only non-pendulum part of the swing.

Without getting into all kinds of detail, have him start off by trying to envision “tucking his elbow into his pocket” on the downswing. Have him keep his right elbow tucked on the downswing. It looks like he’s straightening it out before impact, which can cause his wrists to be behind. You can see on impact how the knuckles on his right hand are all almost facing the ground meaning the club face is wide open.

In the first video he made contact with the ground before the ball, ball position is too far forward and the driver should never make contact with the ground during the swing.

Stand a little taller at address with a driver.

His front heel comes off the ground during his back swing. Keep it planted, it will have a coil effect and add a little distance.

In all the videos he spins on his feet at and after contact so his body is opening but the club head is lagging behind therefore everything will push to the right. Try opening the front toe at address and eliminate the feet spinning after contact. Take some full swings in slow motion or start from the end of the swing and work your way backwards in slow motion just to get the feel of the entire golf swing.

In summary, the club head needs to be square at impact. A simple swing thought is to chase the ball with the club head at impact.

You have to get those special left weighted balls so they go more to the left when hit. $29.99 each but they work.

Many technical issues. Stand up straighter and eliminate so much bend at the knee. He ha an over the top swing which is coming across the ball at impact instead of going through the ball. On take away his right elbow should stay against his body to create an in to out swing path. Take a head cover from the driver and put it under his right arm pit, have him swing and not let it fall out. It will promote an in to out swing path which will help put draw on the ball

Started when I was 10 when we moved near a golf course, Essex county public course Hendricks field, would occasionally sneak on the private club Forest Hill, sssh,so I  found balls and started hitting them with a stick, then I bought a $10 putter at the clubhouse it was my driver and iron too.lol shortly later I earned enough money from caddying and shagging and selling lemonade on Saturdays on the 5th tee. I bought a 3 wood at two guys in Harrison, played almost every day in the spring, summer, not so much fall,Bow/deer season winter too,in the summer do two and a half rounds. Could have been a contender I was a six handicap at age 16 then I found sex and drugs and rock and roll and girls motorcycles 🤮Wasn't as popular back then no lines no waiting not like today, today would drive me nuts stand and wait. I went to school with the pro's sons free cart free locker free play. Anyway Adam back to topic. Good advice from the others. His body is going in too fast, the head of the club head on his down swing. Try a simple thing first when he's addressing the ball and he lays the head on the ground, give the head a little twist to close the face. Good luck have fun 👍

What you talking about Willis I mean Adam. Yeah I don't blame you you saw me once meek and mild, when we were on that fluke trip that Jack ran that you drove him nuts on.lol.. Golf was my life then, ate and slept it. Those were the good old days I was heavier and much stronger had the physique of tiger woods, and ate my Wheaties in the morning,at 6'4 I had a long swing and a long ball, took a long time and a lot of practice to learn not to slice  when to slice how to fade how to draw and how to hook.
