.264 Winchester Magnum.....anyone own one??????

I want to buy my son his first rifle (only 3 years old now) and it seems that the .264 is an overlooked caliber that has awesome ballistics. I don't want a rifle that everyone else has, but is good for whitetail. I don't want heavy recoil either. The 6.5 CM is great, but everyone has them (me included). I looked at the Winchester Model 70. Any opinions??? What you guys think????????????????????

264 Win is a smoking round, that being said ammo is hard to come by unless you reload and has a short barrel life due to erosion of the chamber throat. It is not a round to practice with it is better teserved for hunting firing minimal rounds

I will add this if your looking for a less popular deer caliber while it is around just not super abundant give the 2506 a look.  Will handle what your looking to do with out the down fall of the hotter round shorter life or what everyone else has for the most part

Good choice especially if you plan on taking a trip out west.   I never worry about burning out a barrel because that can be easily corrected.

I spent most of my money on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.

Your entry level rifle would be a .22. Get him a VUDOO!

The 6.5 WBY RPM packs a punch and is capable of being chambered in Weatherby’s new sub-five-pound rifle, the Mark V Backcountry Ti. This combination offers maximum downrange performance in the lightest rifle possible. After years of development, the 6.5 WBY RPM combination achieves weight savings, ballistic performance, and price that cannot be found in a rifle anywhere else.

I don't own a Weatherby.
My first rifle was a Remington Model 700 7RM. A lot changes in one year, nevermind 7-10 years, so choose wisely. The manufacturers are constantly releasing the latest greatest cartridge.
Get in contact with Dan's Custom Guns in SC and build a custom with a Brux barrel.

The 264 Win is a pretty hot round, it is basically a 7mm Rem mag necked to 6.5mm.  That 20 thousandths of bore reduction results in a pretty severe overbore cartridge which means barrel life is short an using the slower burn rate powders you get a ton of muzzleblast.  They also generate a fair amount of recoil.  It would not even be on my list of possible first rifle choices for someone starting out.  To use all of that energy you need a long barrel which combined with the long action equals a heavier longer firearm for them to deal with.  If they are at all sensitive to recoil or muzzleblast they will most likely never shoot it well.  If you are looking for something for deer that isn't real common possibly take a look at the 257 roberts.
