Pond?

Recommended Posts

I have about 30 acres in Pa. that we are always doing habitat improvement on . The one thing the property is really missing is a source of water . What do you think it would cost to have a half to one acre pond built ?

That would be great but I would imagine very expensive, unless you could do it yourself. If you have a water source and access to a dozer would not be to tough. 1 Acre is pretty big might want to consider less if paying someone. Permits could also be expensive.

Do you have a fresh water source for it?  Otherwise it will stagnate.

There are springs on the property but not in the area of where the pond would be. I believe the water table is pretty high.

Get a survey.  The last thing you want is to invest a ton of money into a pond and not have a dependable water source.

The simple answer is to find your water source first and go from there. Also, we dig test pits to see if we have groundwater or need a well drilled. You can easily spend over $1 million if a full acre, lined, with a well drilled for water, and a recirculating stream which would also be lined. If you’re lucky and your soils hold water and any pond will fill with groundwater and no recirculating stream, it will cost much less.

Here is a one acre (.97) pond we built. Required a well connection, lined pond and lined stream, two 300 gallon/minute pumps, fishing points, dock, and habitat that cost just over $1 million. An acre is actually a large pond. All you need is 1/4 to 1/3 acre pond. This one is 11’ at its deepest and holds trout.

Well that's the end of that dream!  lol At that rate even a 1/4 acre would be way out of reach.

Not if it’s a groundwater fed pond without a liner. You need some drain system. We use AgriDrains for our ponds. And water chemistry is critical. It’s more than just digging a hole. We ensure we have ample wetlands benches at 3’ and less planted with native plants. Other wise, they don’t have to cost a million plus. But they can very quickly get expensive.
