Fred Flintstone
October 1st can't get here soon enough! Stewart State Forest has always been a Destination for me in the Fall for Pheasant Hunting. Been Pheasant Hunting at Stewart State Forest since the early 1980s. I have tramped all over the nearly 7,000 Acres of Beautiful Land located close to Stewart International Airport in Orange County,NY. Unfortunately- it is difficult to find out exactly when those Pheasants will be released as New York gives out only- - " Week Of" info on Pheasant Releases. Currently there are 77 Hunter Parking areas at Stewart and once parked- you have to stay on your side of the Road. There used to be 83 Hunting Parking areas years back when a number of Huge areas to Hunt had access for 2 Vehicles instead of just 1. October of 2021 will mark my 48th year of Pheasant Hunting. It has been a " Fun Ride"! Since, I keep Pheasant Journals , I estimate a good 800 or so Pheasants taken since 1974 when,I was 14. And probably a good 100+ Woodcock I know-- .most here think,I only hunt the Wild Turkey- LOL. So-- who here Hunts out of State in New York for the Wily, Wary Ringneck Pheasant? CACKLE,CACKLE-- BOOM!!! Bonefreak 1 Take The Multiple Use Area Challenge.

Bonefreak
Cool! Someday I’ll try it! My setter just turned 10 so it may have to wait for my next setter. what kind of dogs have you had?? And please don’t say Dinos!! Lol Since you don’t know when or where birds are stocked...do you key on hearing shots from other guys when your there and steer to that direction? I can’t imagine it being war zones like NJ WMAs??

I look to hunt the Overgrown Fields + Corn Fields if no one is parked there first. I will hunt the Wetland areas for Pheasants if,I have to. NY Archery Deer Season now opens up on October 1st with Pheasant Hunting in the Southren zone . Archery Deer used to be around October 20th or so. So yeah- there is competition for prime parking areas like corn fields. I used to park at Stewart on New Road whi h is off of Rt. 207 by 3am to be near the front of the line. I would not be alone! By 4am-- you start to see more Pheasant + Bow Deer Hunters arrive. 1 Hour before Sunrise- the car/ Truck line fires up and everyone drives in to their areas or their 3rd choice. Last few years,I would rather get to Stewart around 12 Noon. By then even the Bow Deer Hunters are tired. Some don't leave though- Lunch at their Truck and then back in. Kind of wish there was a 4 hour time limit on parking areas. As far as Dogs, I have had a Black Lab-- Ben who was a great Pheasant Dog. Now my Sister let's me take ABBEY- who is a Flat coated Black Lab. And English Setters early on. I believe the Orange County Federation of Sportsman's Clubs post Pheasant release dates-- Week Of at Stewart along with numbered areas. You can Google that. Usually it is not updated until well into October. Not sure why. Luck. Take The Multiple Use Area Challenge.
