I was there today. there is no model number on the scope, and they won't sell or give a price for one without a scope. So unless someone can verify that it is a worthy scope, I don't think it's such a deal.

Good point.  I'm not a big fan of lousy optics myself.  In the end, you get what you pay for when it comes to good glass.

I have to rethink my post. It seems they are selling for more than that without a scope. so it still may be a good buy, just take the scope off and put on a good one.

If you want the gun, buy the gun for a good price regardless if it comes with a scope.  Sell the scope on eBay and buy the one you want.  Either that or gift the old scope to someone who wants it.

Contrary to the advice above, I usually buy a good gun with whatever glass it comes with.  Most of the shots you'll take in NJ will be under 100 yards, so the magnification you'll use will be pretty low.  If I'm shooting a .30-06 or .308, I'll invest in good glass because I'm taking a longer shot.

However, IMHO, I usually keep my muzzleloader and 11-87 cantilever scopes at their lowest setting while hunting NJ and have a Simmons and Cabalas-brand scope on each one.

Sapere aude.

Audeamus.

When you cannot measure, your knowledge is meager and unsatisfactory.

It's not about magnification, it's about clarity in low light conditions and not fogging up easily, two prominent issues with cheap glass.  I never shoot at deer with shotgun or rifle at more than 4X power, but I use higher end Leupolds that gather light early and late in the day and never fog up and are clear as can be.  Sure some of them are much higher power (I like variable powered scopes) which is fine from the bench, but too many hunters make the mistake of not cranking back down on the power only to have a deer come in quickly and close where they can't find the deer in the scope because they have the power cranked up.  That goes for good and for cheap scopes.
