Burl Wood Working......

In the woods by my house is an oak  tree with a huge burl on it.......I am thinking of making a bowl out of it.......I dont have a lathe so was wondering if anyone ever made one by chipping out the inside.......I will probably just wait for a lathe......it is big enough to gett wo bowsl out of it an inner bowl and then the outer,, I know they have a tool to use to get the inner bowl out......I know to leave it on the tree till i am ready to use it....Any advice ?.....Years ago I had a guy work for me whose family was / is famous for the bowls they make and their bowls sell in the $10,000 to $100,000 at auction etc. the last name is Moulthrop.......

Pm me and i can give you some advice. My father and i make and sell a few hundred bowls a year.  Oak burl is not an easy wood to work with and not as desirable as say cherry , walnut , etc.

if you dont have a lathe, there are knives out there for carving bowls. would take some work and then a lot of sanding to get it smooth. buy yourself a cheap benchtop lathe.

I'm not sure if this article was posted on this forum but I just came across it a couple of weeks ago. I knew burls could have some cool grain patterns but I didn't know some people went to such lengths to procure them!

There's a couple different styles of carving wheels for  a grinder . Might be worth a try
