So my friend got his crossbow yesterday from Gander Mtn. he was telling me everytime he hunts and he is ready to climb down he must replace the hunting bolt with a disposable bolt that he fires into the ground, is this true?

Also he was told by the sales clerk to use 100gr. Montec Broadheads, now I know these are very good braodheads, but is there broadheads for crossbows only or what you use for compounds can be used for crossbows?

This is the crossbow he purchased:

you can use whatever broadheads you want Joe... I use Slick Trick 100's with both my Mathews DXT and my Parker xbow... shoot great and keeps cost down... especailly if like me , your prone to shoot several deer throughout the season :)

Most Xbows with a few exceptions need to be fired at the end of the hunt as you can not let them down and it is illegal to drive with one cocked in your vehical...

NO you dont have to shoot it from your stand to unload it... you remove the hunting arrow and lower it... it perfectly safe to carry it cocked with out and arrow in it....

Two of the most popular ways to uncock/unload them are;

(one) carry a small target in your truck and a field point or keep a field pointed arrow in the truck itself... then simply toss the target on the ground and and load the field pointed arrow and shoot it into the target...

(two) which is how I do it... carry a blunt tipped arrow in your quiver, then at the end of your hunt... unload your hunting arrow, lower you crossbow, then once on the ground load the blunt tipped arrow and CAREFULLY find a soft clear area of dirt or and old soft stump and shoot it into it and your done for the day...

For the record you are legally allowed to carry a field point or blunt tipped arrow while hunting with a crossbow for the use of uncocking it....

Instead of a disposable bolt I bring a small target and and a bolt with a field tip to shoot the bow at the end of the hunt.

Heavy heads and inserts give a good FOC for better flight.  I use brass inserts and 150 grain Slick Tricks.  They fly great.

Also, a heavy bolt absorbs more energy than a light one so the limbs last longer.  I shoot Gold Tip Laser IVs.

I have no idea why he doesn't go to his cousin's archery pro shop, he lives one mile away..........His cousin could answer his questions quickly, and no idea why he didn't buy from him......but that is his choice

 Most XBows can be un-cocked the same way they were cocked.. Just in reverse..

Can use any broadhead you want but total arrow weight should meet manufactures recommendations..

most manufactures advise against it.and suggest the two methods I mentioned to unload it safely, as well as NJF&WL recommend those two procedures as well...

THAT and it's extremely hard the hold the cocking rope with both hand under full limb pressures and push the trigger at the same time to release the string... :loco:

recurve Xbows, specifically the Excalibur brand above are the exceptions I mentioned...

They are great xbows with consistent accuracy, ease of uncocking, and easy in the field string changing,,,, that's three of it's best selling points... :up:
