Heroin and marijuana  are both Schedule one drugs.

Do a little more research. A Schedule listing is not a drug category. Opiods and Opiates can be interchangeable terms but by chemical compounds they are different. Same drug category but different make up.  They are both Narcotic Analgesics

I am as well. Amazing since a vast majority of "advocates" would be smoking it regardless of legality.

On the flip side, some folks see it as about the same as any other illegal drug. The same that funds  street gangs, cartels, border smuggling, Chinese instigation, etc..

Nothing will stop everything. 
However, war on drugs is a complete waste of money. Anyone who wish to smoke weed gets the weed with ease. We invest enormous amount of money to fight it but we can never win. 
Legal weed will take the vast majority of users and their money away from criminal enterprise.
If this is not enough then I will come back again with why continue the fight we have no chance of ever winning.? 

The only problem I see with all this is government involvement.

The group of guys I grew up with hunting, fishing, trapping , camping , sports etc. wouldn't have even thought about using it . For us only the hippies and druggies did that stuff . I guess it was just a different era...one that I loved however!
