BowhunterNJ 10,057
Well, the 3 post PM block hopefully worked, although there was a few hours delay in banning the spammer. @mazzgolfspotted a spammer who tried to post 3 times and embed some links in the keywords. Not sure if they intended on doing the PM spamming, but at least it forced them to post and get identified! Nice job @mazzgolf! What are some ways to identify these screwballs...so we too can participate in Spammer Season!! Basically look for new members with their first posts (takes 3 to unlock PM access). It will look like forced participation, they'll often post something unrelated with a keyword or phrase linked somewhere that looks like a questionable site. Basically what @BowhunterNJ said. Check for: * New user accounts (hover over a user's avatar and a pop up will show account details like when it was created) * Very low post count (look to the left of a post, under the user's avatar, to see the number of posts the account created) * A new, low-post-count user account that resurrects very old threads * A new, low-post-count user account that posts small messages (a single sentence or so) and in the message a single word is a link that when you hover over the link shows it going to a weird or unknown URL. These links can be sometimes hard to notice - if you see a word underlined in a message, it is typically (but not always) a link. This is what originally triggered my spidey sense this particular time. Note that sometimes the bogus posts do contain words or messages relevant to the thread - it isn't always easy to recognize because either there is a human behind the keyboard or its a good AI bot that can post English phrases or small sentences using words in the thread that makes it look relevant.
