Late season scouting

Recommended Posts

So I scouted a piece of state today and utilized the OnX app. I put a pin in an area that I though would show sign. Short answer there was some good run with tracks going both directions. I did find one bed, thought I might find more, and not much rubbing was done in the area. I found 2 scrapes one looked fresh.

the area is mostly holly trees with some nice oaks for stand opportunities. The downside I see to this type of cover is the low canopy. My question for people who have hunted areas like this. Should I pick a tree and cut lanes? Should I just hang the stand low. Or should I brush in a ground blind?  The ground blind is my least favorite as I will not be baiting and will only hunt this area a few times.

It depends on what time of year you will be hunting the area. What it looks like now is nothing like what it will look like in the fall. I always scout this time of year in preparation for next season's hunts, I like to either put my stands up now or mark them for fall. I hunt many areas in the late fall/early winter that I just can't access early fall.

This is a great point.  Winter is a tough season to hunt and they are less active around this time. And even access is always harsher in early Fall, man did some lanes open up for me in some of my spots.

To the original post, I suggest investing in a self-climber. I have a fixed stand in an area i  regularly hunt but for on the go, the self climber allows you to go straight to a new area and hunt.

Agree but adding a light mobile setup has saved me a ton of aggrevation especially in the pines.  Helium sticks and xstand expedition set up in 12 minutes.

Yup, I haven't used this setup yet but i watched plenty of videos on it and looks like a great alternative as well
