looks like a Coopers, I had one nesting in my area this summer , he did a great job at clearing out the chipmunks.

I had a Coopers take one of my Chickens two weeks ago. They are def. big enough.

squared off tail and rounded head is more likely a sharpshin than a cooper's. both species are very capable of taking chickens. the sharpies prefer birds as prey and they are referred to as chicken hawks.

I've been birding for 30 years and did the hawk count at Montclair in 01...it's a Cooper's Hawk.

If they are in a fenced pen and not running free, the plastic 1" mesh works well to keep the hawks out.  I stitched pieces together using twine to make it wide enough and stitched it to the top of the cyclone fence all the way around, then propped it up using saplings and limbs like tent posts
