Sounds like it was left on the tailgate and forgotten about... forgot to shut the tail gate and it fell off on the road.

I don't understand why most trucks don't have an "open tailgate" beep or even just a warning light... cars have "open trunk" lights, why don't truck manufacturers do the same for tailgates?

I was thinking the same. Tailgate open kinda thing.
