Assemblyman Dancer,

My name is Jack Spoto, I am the President of the United Bowhunters of New Jersey. UBNJ has over 3000 members and represents 35,000 bowhunters in the State of New Jersey. I am writing you today in an effort to have the archery clubs in New Jersey to be allowed to hold outdoor 3-D target shoots on their club properties.
In Pennsylvania, the legislature has already allowed Pennsylvania archery clubs to hold their outdoor 3-D target shoots. As long as social distancing is still practiced and certain guidelines are in effect. This means no food to be sold, registration is to be held outside and archers strictly follow all social distancing guidelines recommended by the CDC.
Our New Jersey archery clubs, need the ability to raise funds, to pay their bills, utilities and property taxes. I know we can do so safely and responsibly. I thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Sincerely,

Jack Spoto
President
United Bowhunters of New Jersey

There is power in numbers.  If you are not a member I ask that you reconsider or we will have our rights restricted even more.  Murphy has the highest ratings in his term so far and we need to let him know we have the numbers to be politically significant.

Jack- In the future, feel free to send me a message. Happy to unofficially help with a lobbying strategy and letter drafting.

This isn’t Jack. I was just reposting what was put on the UBNJ Facebook page to get the message out.

I agree there is much power in numbers, and I commend you for your efforts, but I have to make an observation on this subject, maybe it will help the cause, maybe not, but it is my hope as a long time member that some change can be made to elevate UBNJ to as high a status as it had once stood.

I've seen various issues play out with UBNJ for over 40 years now, and the organization was much more effective in the past because the representative numbers were much higher.
What I’m referring to is, when UBNJ puts out a statement that says “we have 3,000 members, and represent 35,000 bowhunters in NJ,” a person, or politician, will look at that and ask, well if you represent 35K bowhunters why do you only have 3K members?

I also don’t believe that pointing out that actual membership is less then 10% of the base you claim to represent, and, stating that there are only 35k bowhunters in NJ is a good idea either. For a politician, 35K is an irrelevant number of voters statewide, especially for an issue that you know that particular pol totally disagrees with.

Don’t want to get too long winded here, but my point is, UBNJ needs to do a better job of recruiting outside the typical (And easy)  recruitment platforms if they/we want to increase membership roles and really have an impact on legislation as the org had years ago.
Recruiting at 3D shoots, game dinners, and other hunting related venues and functions is (preaching to the choir) unproductive, as evidenced by the stagnant membership numbers for the last 30 years!

I’ve provided several ideas on recruitment outside the “comfort zone” in the past, but they’ve fallen on deaf ears for various reasons which I won’t get into, but if UBNJ truly wants to initiate change in legislation as it relates to our bowhunting rights, they first must initiate change in the methods they use to increase the membership.

I did, not long ago, contact one of the new reps on this forum, and she was very receptive to hearing my thoughts, which i will follow up on at some point.
So my hope for UBNJ is that with some new blood and some fresh ideas, it may take the org to a higher level of membership, and a new found respect by the pols in NJ.
Otherwise I fear the efforts will be wasted.
