Not sure where to start with this, but I'll take a stab at it.

Biased on what you've written, you reset the computer back to factory defaults. Not the greatest thing, but it does what it says it will do. Unfortunately, in most cases it blasts your data at the same time. No programs or data files anymore.

You have a backup, and I'll assume it's a Windows Backup the feature that's built into Windows itself. When you go to Control Panels you'll see a backup hand restore section. Open that control panel and make sure your external drive is connected to the computer. If Windows sees the backups on there when you plug it in, great. If not, we might have to tell Windows where the backups are located.

When you get to the backup and restore control panel look at the restore section. If all it says is Select another backup to restore files from, click that. It will launch a wizard that will guide you through locating your backups and selecting which one to restore. Tat should bring nearly everything back from the dead.

Let me know if that works or not.

When you cannot measure, your knowledge is meager and unsatisfactory.

Thanks Haskell ! I'll try later . I did get my pix, favs n music back from the disk there just in a user file some where the one thing that I didn't get back was my Nortons 360 wihich had all my log ins n passwords, I thought when I was making the backup disk. Though I saw it get saved. Any way all my stuff is going on paper as soon as I can remember all my passwords n logins
