Yes...the larger a man is, his strength becomes disproportionate to his body size.  A 450lb man pulling 1100lbs is amazing because of the sheer weight he moves.  But a 140lb guy pulling 600lbs is pound-for-pound far more impressive 

Normal sized guys could never compete with strongmen or powerlifters anyway, no matter what decade you are talking about.  The top guys (and girls) are genetically superior, and have a lifetime of training under their belt.  Not to mention the monetization of these sports.  Normal folks can't compete in strongman or powerlifting because they couldn't even afford to feed themselves the amount of food it requires to grow and recover.  You need sponsors.  

Same for the drugs.   This isn't back-alley Dbol like Arnold took.  This is state of the art science.  A lot of things have to come together for a guy to do what Halfthor did yesterday.

Bodyweight isn't everything either, especially when it comes to pulling a dead.  Halfthor is at a distinct disadvantage when pulling a dead because of his freakish height.  Hall is 6'3", which makes deadlifting with standard plates far easier.  

Zydrunas Savickas pulled 1155, but on tires, making the lift a bit easier.  Big Z is 6'3" also, and the added height of the tires makes the pull way easier.

It's easy for folks to try to talk down at what Halfthor did yesterday when they have no idea what actually goes in to it
