Do you think the spike was heated before , when you used on the RR ??  and  once you change its composition does it need to be heat treated a 2nd time ?? But yes I use the spikes for chisels all the time and also for welding art projects  ( future son in law uses them ) ........I live by a freight train tracks so I have access to 1000's just lying around......
