Recommendation for a Center Pin Rod....

Recommended Posts

I have never center pin fished for steelhead, but apparently it is the superior way to catch steelhead. For you guys in the know, what gloomis rod would you recommend for the salmon river and why?? There are 4 models....

Wait for OMC to chime in, he’s been center pinning for quite some time. I am a die hard switch rod guy, tried a centerpin and just wasn’t my bag

Nick I have a G Loomis STFR 1601 / 13'4" Light  Moderate Action 4-8 lb  1/4 - 1/2 oz.

It is my go to rod , a great stick but a little stiff which is great for hook set but less forgiving on the fight. Still very happy with it.

I also have a custom Lamiglas which is heavy and a St Croix which is very soft.

Raven really specializes in CPs so I’m sure they have a lot good options also.

Also I’d spend the money on the reel, not the rod. The prices of the loomis are insane

Another pretty pricey reel. I’ve had a islander for over 20 years and have nothing but good things to say about it. It wasn’t a cheap reel when I got it. But it pretty bulletproof.there’s plenty of reels  Less than half the price of the kingpin that you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Can’t go wrong with a Islander they are very good. I have a Spahr which I don’t think are even made anymore. Both are bulletproof which I need because I am hard on my equipment. I have a couple of Ravin Matrix Reels which are smaller and fit ultralight rods for trout fishing around here.My kids use them for Steelies and they work fine, the Startup is a little sticky but really not an issue on quicker waters.

I run a raven T5 on a raven RV9. Mostly fish the salmon and surrounding tribs.  Can't go wrong with a Kingpin if your willing to spend the money.
