The ID was easy. These are the ones you see flying low over fields and hovering periodically. Don't see them too often though.

Its really not a myth. He actually did not think Bald Eagle was an appropriate bird and believed a Turkey much closer resembled in behavior American spirit. Your article actually proves this point.
