Opening Day

Had a very successful pheasant opening day. This was my first time hunting on a WMA. In addition to the live ones, I was surprised how many dead birds my dog found. I’m not talking ones eaten by predators. Are slob hunters reaching their bag limits and just shooting extra birds or not putting in an effort to retrieve what they harvested?  Several other hunters also noticed the same.

First year since I started going in 2013 that I'm not going this year. too much going on to be gone for a few days.

I went around mid day and I have to say everyone I ran into was very friendly and safe. After reading these boards thought it was going to be like the beginning of saving private Ryan.

The dead birds were probably from hunters without dogs. Dropped birds can be hard to find in thick cover sometimes without a dog. Especially if bird is still alive when dropped and runs a ways before it dies.

I hope that’s the case.  I found to roosters that were as big as turkeys.
