for the guys who split firewood by hand

6 pound maul/axe or 8 pound maul /axe?

wood handle or fiberglass?

i will have no choice but to buy seasoned firewood for this year since my stove is being installed now. but soon i will be splitting wood for next years use. 

i dont have an extra 1000 to drop on a hydraulic splitter

Fiberglass and get a 6 and a 8, nice to have both if a friend stop by while splitting some

I have a bunch of mauls in every shape and size but I only ever use a  6 lb with a hickory handle.  

8 lb is overkill and the wood handle absorbs vibration better.

I've heated with wood my entire life and have never used a splitter.  Save your money, you don't need one.

After watching you bounce that 6lb'er off the logs, I'd go with at least 10lb.

I agree.  Although I would recommend being picky about the wood you cut or bring home if you can.  Nice straight grained ash, oak, maple or the like is what I look for.  I leave the twisted, knotty,  large logs for the guys with the machines.

I have a 8lb husky and it sucks.. too heavy you get tired from swinging it.
I grab my buddys 6lb and i can split much longer with it before getting fatigued..

AND a few cold beers while splitting eliminates the soreness the next day!!!  I am burning in the same stove as you, but I have the pedestal base.  Great stove for sure.

whats the life span of a hickory handle. i use to have one, the handle lasted but the damn maul always came loose from the handle. operator error?

Depends who's swinging it.  

They should last for many years.
