I'm surprised no one mentioned those "8-in-1 jackets". I like those because on the hot days you can strip off the inner liner and even zip off the sleeves to get you down to just a vest. But on those cold winter days, you leave in the inner liner and sleeves (or you could leave the sleeves on but take out the liner) and it keeps in the warmth. You have options with this kind of coat for different temps.

I have this one - I like it a lot. But I don't have a dog, so I don't have a need to carry a lot of extra stuff. I just mainly carry a bunch of shells in the pockets.

I have a Gamehide vest that works well.  Nothing special but it does the job of holding birds and shells, plenty of pockets, etc.  It's not expensive but is well made IMO.

As others have stated, the freedom of movement in a vest vs. jacket is something to consider, and it's easier to layer under a vest without getting all bound up like the Michelin Man.
