BowhunterNJ Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Looks like they are thinking about opening up more municipality land in Colts Neck to hunting...but seems like residents don't really get involved enough to get the ball rolling... Residents welcome to voice opinions on deer issue By JACK MURTHA Staff Writer COLTS NECK — There is no time like the present for residents who wish to voice their opinion on how to handle Colts Neck’s growing deer population. The Colts Neck Wildlife Committee is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. March 4 in the small meeting room of the Colts Neck Library, 126 Cedar Drive. Committee members plan to discuss how to quell problems caused by deer that roam the municipality, according to Mayor Russell Macnow. “It is a good place to express your opinion,” he said. Deer control has been a hot topic in Colts Neck for some time. About a year ago, the Township Committee considered — but did not adopt — an ordinance that would have opened more areas of the municipality to hunting. More recently, wildlife committee members presented their recommendations to the governing body, with no subsequent action. Many residents have attended Township Committee meetings to speak out against relaxed hunting regulations. Some individuals have spoken in favor of the move. But few residents have attended meetings of the wildlife committee, which was formed to address the deer issue, among other things, Macnow said. “Nobody comes,” the mayor said. “I don’t get it.” Residents can make their concerns known during the March 4 meeting, Macnow said, adding that now is the best time to share those thoughts with members of the governing body. It's a very wealthy town with many large landowners and many large homes on large lots. And plenty of deer, of course, given little or no hunting pressure. https://www.troutscapes.com/ https://nativefishcoalition.org/national-board

BowhunterNJ Posted February 28, 2014 Author Posted February 28, 2014 I play golf in Colts Neck from time to time and I have to say, I don't think I've ever seen a deer or much deer sign. I'm assuming those golf courses have some kind of hunting or deer management approach to keep them at bay. First time there I was totally expecting to see like 100 deer on the fairway! haha
Sykk Physh Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Matt, most of the golf course do have there own management program .. However , I have done a lot of environmental work over the year in colts neck..Amazing amount of quality deer in town. However, with township ordinances and wealthy homeowners the no hunting answer is always found to be the first thing you hear.. I may attend this meeting just to hear what is going tone said and maybe see if access to land is available.. Capt. BowhunterNJ Posted February 28, 2014 Author Posted February 28, 2014 There is no doubt colts neck has always had some monsters! Makes sense too that the golf courses would have a management plan in place. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
