As Nomad said, by far the best thing that you can do is take the hunter ed class.  That's gonna answer many of your questions.  

Get to know some of the guys in your area, that will help a lot too.  We have a lot of get-togethers, which is a great way to meet hunters from your area.

@mcampise  were you able to find a mentor? I am a new hunter too. Perhaps I join you and your mentor on a walk one day. Kill two birds with one stone.

I am taking my Hunter Ed course of Nov. 9. I am an eagle scout and have plenty of time in woods but never hunted. I live in Cherry Hill and will move to New Brunswick in January 2020. I am looking to learn hunting with shotgun.

You're absolutely right.  I was just thinking of their mentoring programs.  I haven't seen anything in there since EHD hit it.  Can't bait there either.
