Looking for a mentor

Yes I’m real. But I was having issues logging into the site before. Also I didn’t have my notifications on before so I kept checking my email but thought no one responded. To reply: I’m 37, I live in Bergen county, I wanted to use a shotgun (note I don’t have one...this is something I’m trying to work out with the wife lol). I do have a firearms permit though. 

My hope was to try this out with the apprentice license. Hopefully I’ll enjoy it. I hope that provides some insight.

Priority uno.YOU NEED to obtain a hunter safety certificate to acquire a hunting licence.Don't sweat it,it's easy and fun,know fails,no gun?No problem,they provide them.Getting started....

Yeah - basically.  I just feel that if I'm out there, get luck and am able to harvest a deer - the least I can do is make sure I can properly eat it, and not waste it all.  I know there is an apprentice license out there.  (sorry for the delay in responding BTW)

I'm sure someone will step up.  Being in Bergen County, your shotgun opportunities are more limited on public lands than counties further west of you.  I don't hunt enough shotgun to offer to help take you hunting, but I'd be more than happy to walk my woods in Sparta with you and show you sign, what to look for, where to set up stands and why, etc.  Spend as much time in the hunting woods as you can without pressuring the deer you plan to hunt, or even walk a county park and look for deer sign and figure out what it is telling you.  Which directions are the tracks in the mud (snow in winter)?  If all from one direction more or less, than at what time of day or night?  This is where a trail cam comes in handy.  What are they feeding on?  Acorns and other mast or corn or woody browse or grasses or all or some of the above?  Think about wind direction and not just for the day you are in the woods, but what direction is the wind mostly out of for your area?  You will learn to set stands accordingly and to never hunt out of them on bad wind days.   The internet has historical wind graphs that are very helpful if you don't otherwise know that info.

I'm usually in PA and don't hunt the 6 day shotgun season here unless I'm tagged out in PA, and I don't get the shotgun permits for the extended season, just muzzleloader seasons .  I also hunt in NJ where you would need another permit to hunt, or just go as a guest observer.  Good people here and I'm sure somebody can get you out.  Let us know when you have all the paperwork done.  If the stars align, I'll shoot you a pm when I can get you out, but you should have somebody you can rely on before paying for a license.  Or just take the hunting courses and we can help you with any questions you have later.

Thanks for all the replies. One thing I’d like to clarify - I live in Bergen County but I’m willing to travel most places in NJ north of exit 7 on the turnpike and out to maybe PA - like an hour and a half from where I am - so Passaic, warren, Sussex, Morris, hunterdon, middlesex.

Also: I didn’t come from a from a family that hunts - so I don’t really have any resources as far as asking others - plus I live in SE Bergen county - so it’s pretty urban- these conversations don’t go far. So again any advice/tips are appreciated.

I am also from Bergen County and I can tell you there are places to hunt not too far from here. I hunt all the way out in Blairstown/Knowlton area basically between exit 12 to exit 4 off of rt 80. You can PM me and we can talk. I don’t mind helping out other hunters. I’m unable to bring guests to the private piece I hunt but I can give you information on productive land. I’d also be willing to show/help you put if needed.

I agree, a lot of information is provided in the work book and dvd in preparation for the field trial and test. 

On a side note, don’t let that JHBowhunter guy suck you into private messages where he’ll start sending you pornographic pictures of swollen scrotums from freak deer he and his band of four have been inbreeding with for years j/k
