Right, technically correct and I guess it keeps spikes "over-competing" with a main beam measurement.

OK, we'll make it easy.  Weight +antler score+2x age.  10 bonus points for public land, 10 bonus points for longbow/recurve, -10 points for compound/crossbow, -20 points for shotgun, +20 points for hunter over 55 years of age, +20 points if you have to measure at night and with cold fingers.

OK so to finalize the New Scoring Method for Team and Individual Contests:

New Scoring Method:

Scoring:

  • Doe Entries:
    • 10 points each
    • Plus Picture Credit (see below for Picture Scoring Credit)
  • Buck Entries:
    • Total number of points 1" or greater (no rounding up)
    • Plus the longest tine from the right beam (see below for Buck Measurement Scoring).
    • Plus the longest tine from the left beam (see below for Buck Measurement Scoring).
    • Plus the inside spread credit (see below for Buck Measurement Scoring).
    • Plus Picture Credit (see below for Picture Scoring Credit)

Scoring Credit System:

  • Picture Scoring Credit:
    • Picture of deer only: 2 point
    • Picture of you with the deer: 4 points
    • Picture of you with the deer and weapon used: 6 points
  • Buck Measurement Scoring:
    • Tine Length measurement requirements:
      • Must be actual tines branching off of a main beam. 
        • Spike bucks are considered to have main beams only, not tines.
      • Measure to the nearest 0.5"
        • Less than x.25" rounds down to x.0"
        • Greater than or equal to x.25" rounds up to x.5"
      • Minimum point length is 1" measured from the base of the tine, where the main beam would cross through.  Rounding up measurement is not permitted in 1" requirement.
      • Use of rigid tape measure permitted 
      • Follow the Measurement Guidelines picture below
    • Inside Spread measurement requirements:
      • Measure to the nearest 0.5"
        • Less than x.25" rounds down to x.0"
        • Greater than or equal to x.25" rounds up to x.5"
      • Use of rigid tape measure permitted
      • Follow the Measurement Guidelines picture below
    • Closeup photos of points not clearly visible or of questionable length must be provided if requested by NJ Woods & Water admin/moderators

So a massive 8 loses to a tiny 9.  Ok sounds fair to me!
