This might seem like a stupid question, but can anyone recommend a nice wine that I could buy?  I have been a colossal douche most of my life (that can't be helped).  I want to do something nice for my wife and I want it to be really nice.  Something for after a movie or dinner.  I know nothing about wine, I'd rather get a 30-pack, but that's not going to cut it.  Any ideas?  I would have asked over at the "other site" but we all know how that would have gone ..............

White or red? For white if you can find it is Beringer reserve chardonnay good bottle for the price of about $30.00 a bottle

Thanks.  I have no idea what kind of wine she likes or even if she likes it, but that's not because I don't know my wife (of 20+ years), its cause we don't drink wine.  And I don't want to ask, because I wanted to surprise her.

I am a beer and wine snob, so you've come to the right place.

The answer to your question is, it depends on her and how well you know her. Does she like reds or whites? Sweet, or tawny grapes?

For example, I like Cabernets because they are bold with their flavor and feature a nice oak flavor. They are darker wines and not that sweet. Goes great with a steak. A more subtle wine would be a merlot or a Shiraz. They are not too sweet but more fruity, bringing out more of the grape and other complex favors.

If she's not into the red grape flavor you could go with a blush, which is a very light wine, more pink in color. Very gentle flavor and subtle grape favors. It lacks the boldness of a deeper red, but goes well as a fireside or cocktail wine.

And as Palawman mentioned, there are the whites. Like reds, they can vary greatly in their flavor and sweetness. Chardonnays are fruity and sweet, Pinot Gris (Grigio) are crisp wines, and Sauvignon Blanc are fresh and crisp with a. Somewhat grapefruit, grassy flavor.

In situations like these, I just ask. Bring it up in casual conversation like, "someone on the hunting forums was asking about wine and stuff, what kinds of wine do you like?" We're men, playing stupid comes natural, and she'll be impressed that you asked.

Good luck!

Hmmm, well what does she like to drink? Any info might help narrow down on a good choice, if we can extrapolate on her other preferences a bit :)

If she doesn't drink at all or just doesn't drink wine often, I would definitely stick with a white wine...and the sweeter the better.

I like Palawman30's recommendation, and Ken's recommendation of a chardonnay is good too.

Do you two have kids? I'd recommend collaborating with one of the kids to maybe prep the house with some candles, flowers, music, etc while you two are out to dinner so it's a nice surprise when you guys get home? If not...well you might have to adhoc it once you get back, but have those things ready to go when you do get home.

This ^^.. A red wine would be more romantic and its better for you too,  so i'd go to a wine store and ask for a late season wine or better yet, just ask for the sweetest red they have.. .. Most of the people that run those stores are wine-os so, they should be able to hook you up...

Not knowing what she likes in wine is a roll of the dice, but you should get bonus points for trying.  Wine is highly individualized by those who drink it.  I'm not big on overly sweet wines unless I'm drinking something like Port with dessert.  I prefer Merlots, Cabernets, and Pino Noirs most of the time.  I'm personally not a big drinker of white wine.  There are many other wonderful reds including Malbecs and others.  Stay away from the twist-offs and box wines and you should be able to impress her  :)
