and what do you consider central NJ  or how far would you travel ?

I thought, growing old would take longer !

I spent most of my money on shotguns and fly rods.  The rest I just wasted.

Why not train your dog yourself?

I’m an advocate for training dogs yourself, but if it’s your first dog, I would find a trainer that trains the dog and teaches you the how and why he’s doing what he’s doing. There are a lot of intricate details that not all books will mention. I have two GSPs. The first one was trained and I was very involved; the second one, I trained myself. You need a lot of time and a lot of resources.

Mike -

I belong to a Navhda chapter here in DE.  Lots of good folks, very willing to help.  I am sure the NJ chapter folks are the same.

However, be aware that there are all levels of training skill within the membership of each club.  Also be aware that Navhda's primary focus is retrieving and water work.  They typically introduce dogs to water and water retrieves long before they do any upland bird training.   If you are mostly interested in pursuing upland game, some of what they do in Navhda may not be all that useful to you.

Be aware that there are many different ways to get from here to there with a bird dog and some trainers use considerably more pressure and demand much more pure obedience than others.

If you go to a Navhda training day, I recommend you go, at first,  without your dog and observe.  You will see some training scenarios you will want to emulate with your dog and you will see some that you may not.  Watch and learn.   You will see some nice dogs and meet some knowledgeable trainers.

There are two gentlemen who  you might want to talk to.  One is Dom Priete, who lives and trains in Southhampton, NJ.  The other is Matt Basilone of Sunrise Kennels in Porchtown(I think) NJ. Its near Elmer, NJ.

Both are professional bird dog trainers who are quite capable of training a bird dog to the very highest competitive level.   If you could shadow one of these folks for a day, watch them do what they do, it would be worth whatever they might charge you.   You would really get to see "how it's done".

Matt competes with his dogs which means that, starting in September, he will be on the road a lot.    Dom does not compete any longer and works at home.

If it weren't so G..D... hot and humid, I would have you meet me at the English Setter Club in Medford, NJ and show you a few things myself.   Unfortunately, it is a 2 hour trip  and schlepping my animals up from Delaware in this heat... is not going to happen.
