Guatemala fishing - recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Anybody been?      Looking to take my 22 year old son on a college graduation trip.  December through end of March is preferred.  I know the Pacific Sailfish is supposed to be off the charts there.      Looking for safe, clean, convenient, trustworthy...   Airfare looks pretty reasonable.   All -inclusive might work as well but looking for real experience there. Please share if you have it!

My fallback is Abaco which I know full well and will just rent my own boat, but looking for something different.

Los Suenos is also a possibility.

I fished at Pacific FIns a while back, probably 10 yrs ago.  https://pacificfinsresort.com/

FIshing was excellent for sailfish.  We probably caught 15-20/boat /day.  I was also lucky enough to hook up with the only 2 blue marlin I have ever caught, one of which was 454 lbs.  I leadered it in about 30 min, but the captain wanted to keep fighting it because they had a film crew come in and dive with it.  It wound up getting tail wrapped and died.  They took it in and divided it up among the villagers.

There wasn't much to do around town, and you needed an armed escort to go anywhere.  Also had  armed guards patrolling the lodge every night and day.  There was a great bar and pool at the lodge, and the food was good.  Most of our crew got sick though, something in the water.

I'll see if I can find the pics.

Jack, I can only give you were i was in cabo..  not sure if you've been.  The place i stayed at had all inclusive in studio rooms for 2200 for 2..  they have every thing available through them.  Fishing charters are cheap enough with 325 being the average for 8 hours..  lots to do as well and all the eateries at resort were awsome plus there was a few st marina del cabo that are included..

Heheh, that right there is a deal breaker. If I need a guard I am not going

Already fished that area.  Looking more toward Central America. Los Suenos is high on the list. Tropic Star Lodge in Panama as well. Or Guatemala.   Safety and cost are concerns.  All have food fishing. Want to do a few days offshore and a few days inshore like tarpon snook roosters and cubera.

Jakesbeard (John Hoinowski) from the site that-shall-not-be-named raved about the fishing in Panama when his wife won a trip down there from her employer for stellar performance.  I can get the details from him if you are interested.

I have John's number  - thanks

Charlie Sahanas gave me some good leads, as Pete Wagner of Hyper Striper charters also runs charters out of Los Suenos.

I am finding that central America fishing is quite a bit more costly than I hoped...  Not looking good.
