Watching them follow in your footsteps. Not many kids I know will get up at 3:30am to hit the beach for some surf fishing at daybreak. Reminds me when I was a kid cruising the beaches of seaside, seaside park and IBSP looking to get a tight line

Overall a slow morning. At 6:15 my son hooked into something casting a 1/2 oz deadly dick that ripped line off his reel so fast he looked at me like WTF LOL. Fought it for about 4 minutes and it got off. I got two shorts on a jig.

Could have foul-hooked a cow-nose ray?

Or although it might seem late for a big striper, I caught a 42" in the Lavallette surf once, in August, on the tiniest of silver bullet bucktail jigs on 8# line.  Bass thought he was getting a sand eel I guess

No idea but took off pretty fast for a ray. Peeled line fast like an Albie or big bluefish

Hmmm didn’t even think of that. May have foul hooked it as well, that would explain it just coming off.

Shark probably ate it. Lots of hard bone in their mouths.  Long run, head shakes, boney mouth.   After a good run a smart fish will turn and maybe come at ya.  Shaking his head at the same time. If the angler isn't tight to the fish....the hook will pop out.
