Did another solo trip out to Toms Canyon on friday .  Very calm & beautiful water, clear and blue as can be.  Very slow action but did manage to put 2 small yellowfin in the box.  I had a big eye hit & it snapped my rigger...not sure why...  either the clip got hung up or there was a weak spot in the pole. (I caught one of the YFT on the same clip and had no issues.)  Decided to move to where i got the bluefin, came across Bluefins chasing bait all over.  I threw every option at them but couldn't get them to bite. I also saw 3 makos, 3 hammerheads & a dusky shark all sunning them selves with a bunch of molas & turtles to boot.  Not much in the box but a beautiful day on the water, racked up a bunch of miles & loved every minute it.

Great video. Should have tried a popper casting.

Cant believe you are doing those trips alone. Safety reason is one but to boring alone.

That is awesome. Congrats on your catch and appreciating some quiet time with yourself. (I could tell that from your pics) Most people need others around to enjoy fishing or hunting trips but, a few of us have the best times alone soaking the nature around us  in.

I did throw poppers and jigs, wouldn't touch anything. The sand eel dance was unreal!

 

Safety is a big concern, I did a lot this year to the boat to make it even safer. Also know a lot of people around me.  Have 2 epirbs , life raft, satellite phone & a garmin InReach.

Run off lures makes a lead sand eel. I change the hook out to a top located assist hook.

They work great ripped through the water, and IMO will outfish a butterfly jig when jigging.

They have great action and match the sand eel hatch very well.

We all have opinions...so here is mine. If the bluefin are on too feeding, throw a sinking bait. The poppers are NOT the ticket. Highly recommend the Siren deep seductress 155 in black tie affair or butterfish color. Use bkk lone diablo hooks. They definitely want a smaller, sinking stick bait.My buddy did very well recently. As hammer said, try an eel lure....I prefer the 10 " ronz hd in silver metallic. I will be out there tomorrow...cant wait.
