BHC Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 I've owned all brands but Dodge....reliability wise Toyota hands down, I have owned 3 Tacomas over the years, and once I retire I trade/sell my Tundra and go back to a Tacoma Rutting Buck and Huntfree77 1 1
FishNHard Posted June 27, 2019 Author Posted June 27, 2019 BHC, I lost my last 2 Toyotas to frame issues so I have a little apprehension of buying another... not gonna bash them because I never had a powertrain or any other issues did you do any undercoating or such on your tundra?
hammer4reel Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 Just my opinion . the loss is size in a mid size and comfort isn’t worth it . mid size and full size get about the same gas mileage , and the full size with the turbo 6 get even better gas mileage than the mid size trucks . A Tacoma isn’t a truck , it’s a suv with a bed . if doing any towing etc you need to make sure to buy one with the extra package, as most of them don’t have it . The comfort and room in a full size is tough to beat. lots of 3 year old turned in leases showing on lots . Many at half the price of new with less than 36K miles Haskell_Hunter, DBuck, Mink and 5 others 7 1
Mink Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 Too many issues with Toyota frames rotting ! I think the price really isn't that much different between mid and full size trucks , and companies put their best drivetrains in the full size trucks. SPEARFISH Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 I tried a mid size once. Not for me. hammer4reel 1
Swamp_Yankee Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 Forgive my ignorance but what is a mid-size truck? Is that what half-time are called now? I live back in the woods you see My woman and the kids and the dogs and me I got a shotgun a rifle and a four wheel drive and a country boy can survive
Live to Hunt Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 I have owned mid sized not worth the money. hammer4reel 1 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈

barrike Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 3 months ago I traded my 2005 Frontier with 203,000 miles for a 2018 F-150. I was happy with the Frontier overall. It ran great. There were never any engine or transmission issues. Only normal wear and tear stuff. I didn't drive it much the last 5 years I had it. I was only putting 5,000 miles a year on it, but I had to replace the brakes and rotors every 2 years because they rusted out. The main reason I got rid of it was that everything underneath it was rusted out and would have cost too much to fix. I went to the F-150 because I needed the extra room for the family. 4 people in a Frontier is pretty tight. I'm happy with the F-150. WAY more power and better gas mileage than the Frontier. Plus it has plenty of room for the 4 of us. hammer4reel 1
MikeStaten Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 My friend was looking at the frontier versus the tacoma. I rented one of each over the past few weeks. The tacoma interior was a lot nicer and the ride was much better in the tacoma. The frontier basically has not had any changes since 2005. I have an old '05 xterra and the interior is almost identical to to the current frontier. The xterra has 175k miles on it and has been a very reliable truck. However, if considering one for a daily driver the ride is pretty rough and gas mileage is not good for that sized truck. If looking for a beater hunting truck/suv, the xterra or frontier is fine. The xterra and frontier had some radiator issues back in the mid to late 2000s that contaminated the trans fluid with coolant and destroyed some transmissions. I think they fixed that by the 2010 model year or so but something to look into if you buy a used one.
Big Blue Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 Toyota Tacoma for me.... I had a 04 with 279000 miles before I wrecked it..... Had collision on it and still had over $10,000 in book value..... Took that and bought a brand new 2014 Toyota Tacoma which now has a 140,000 miles on it running strong..... They are not cheap but are very reliable and hold their value very well..... Prior to that I had a Ford ranger which they no longer make..... Started to have problems with it when I traded it in....good luck
not on the rug Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 Frontier or Tacoma. No reason to own a full sized truck unless you have a reason to actually own one...i.e. hauling a 10k lb boat or trailer on a daily basis. I'm partial to Nissan vehicles, so I'd say frontier for sure. Despite what Dan said above, they actually are trucks. Body on frame construction and actual 4wd systems. gsh370 1

That issue has been resolved several years ago on older models. When they did rust out Toyota replaced the entire truck for freeSent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk not on the rug 1

Not true , pull up specs on 90% of the Tacoma on the road , they aren’t built to even pull small class trailers. even a Cherokee is rated high enough to do that. Interior room IMO is also a big deal. the seat heights on those smaller trucks can really cause back issues.’ they aren’t built for a 6’ or larger person. While driving a full size truck you will also have a lot less assholes pull out in front of you when you shouldn’t. FULL SIZE. shines in every way unless you have a tiny garage lol CJ3a 1
