there are not many Lizard species in NJ.  I'll say its a Northern Fence Lizard with a different pattern.  I assume your down towards the Pines?  We have had some weird shit show up at my house in NW Jersey - hitchhikers on landscape materials delivered to the adjacent garden center from various distant locations.  So I guess it could be something unusual.  But my guess is the fence lizard.

of course i was joking about the Gila Monster, but could this just be some exotic that someone let out intentionally or accidentally like an Iguana?  Most likely an escaped or released "pet" don't think it's even remotely a native NJ species of lizard and of course is not a salamander or newt

Nothing spooks deer more than my stank…

Yep, not many lizard species in Jersey. So probably a Northern fenceswift.

Used to catch em behind the VFW in Lacey as kids in the early 80s....right around when the ET movie was out....

I remember I caught one in a debris pile n went over to show my brother....he didn't see it in my hand and said "how u get him to stay on your shoulder like that"??!!

Well, when I caught the first one, a second one must hav jumped up on my shoulder & I didn't even know!!

I called him E.T. after the movie!!  Lol

We were so happy that we didn't hav to wait to go to grams in Florida to catch lizards!!

Classic moment down in the pines!!

You just reminded me, I meant to post this guy I saw at my house the other day.  South NJ, pine barren area.

Any idea what kind?

I have seen some like this in Colliers Mills WMA

I thought, growing old would take longer !

I spent most of my money on shotguns and fly rods.  The rest I just wasted.

Don't think so Jack. But he was cool to look at.
