Ok so.. I'm just sitting here thinking about getting a smart phone.. Not because i'm particularly impressed with their features as i have better things to do then sit around all day and try to figure out how they work but, more so  for 1 feature i  might find to be a little more convenient than the way i do things now..  Right now i'm using a stand alone "hot spot" .. And i was wondering if the smart phones with that capability work just as good

anybody have any idea?

They're all pretty good, get whatever fits your budget.

I am totally biased toward Apple gear, so I use an iPhone 4S.  Wife has a 5S, work gave me a 5S, and the kid has a 5C.  4S is affordable and it works, but the 5S is real slick.  5C is a good value and a well-made product although it does feature plastic parts.  All will work as a WiFi hotspot.

The thing to keep in mind is that Verizon is one of the only carriers that won't let you talk on the phone and use data at the same time.  It's due to the way they've implemented their cell technology, not with the technology itself.  So Verizon customers cannot use their cell phones as WiFi hotspots and talk on the phone at the same time.

Sapere aude.

When you cannot measure, your knowledge is meager and unsatisfactory.

They are all great, the only reasons I went with a Andriod over the Apple phones was: I already knew how the Andriod system worked, also with Andriod certain Apps maybe Free versus Apple. My cousin is a manager at various Verizon Wireless Stores, when I wanted a new phone I asked her many questions over the two. Now when I'm home or at a place with WiFi I use the WiFi, I like the option of having my Data off and using it when needed. Either way you go, it won't be a poor choice

Not sure who you have for service, but all your major stores like Best Buy, PC Richards, etc carry all the major cell companies, and they at times give better deals for your money then say Verizon Wireless Stores, AT&T, T-Mobil, etc. I'm due for a new phone November 2014, I will look into these stores for best deal

Not to hijack this thread, but if durability and ruggedness are a concern, there are two phones you should look at.  One is the first waterproof, shock proof phone made by Casio which is their GZ One and there is now a similar phone by Samsung (don't know the model).  I had the original GZ One flip phone and then made the switch to their smart phone about 2 1/2 years ago and plan to upgrade to their most recent version one day soon.  I drop it on the ground, in the river, whatever and zero issues.  I've even taken pictures under water with it.  No need for a bulky case.  I'm surprised Apple hasn't jumped on this yet.  If you're around a lot of water or just generally tough on your gear, pick up one of these which have all the same features as other smart phones.

Protect your SmartPhone by using a aftermarket product such as Otterbox or something like it. I dropped my smartphone 25' from my treestand, the Otterbox protected it otherwise I'm sure it would of been damaged. My wife had a kid bump into her this past fall she didn't have the Otterbox the screen was shattered thank GOD we had insurance !!!  She now has the Otterbox. I found that Amazon.com has the best deals on these

Thanks for the input gents....  I was using Sprint for 10 or so years but switched to Verizon about a year and a half ago because of reception issues where i live.. May switch back to Sprint soon.. Right now i'm leaning towards a more rugged model of phone, The Kyocera Torque.. but would like to stay with a slider if i can.. cant seem to get use to the touch screens...

I've been using a Galaxy 3 with Verizon service...

Hot spot works great.

Very fast hook up, need to be plugged into power source, sucks battery life pretty quick.

I was a Blackberry guy until switching to the Galaxy. You can use to the touch screen in no time believe me.

I have the Samsung galaxy s4 thing is great. If you are worried about sprints service you can get a Air rave that hooks up to your cable and boosts your service. Works great in my house and yard which is where I have most issues. It is free long as you call sprint and tell them. Also the otterbox is a life saver. I got my came one for free from the sprint store when i bought my phone.
