Chainsaw Help

I have a Stihl 028AV Wood Boss with a 44mm cylinder. I have blown 3 pistons and cylinders in the last three weeks. The first one I had a broken piece of metal  inside the cylinder which blew it after it bored a grove in the piston. The next two I have no clue why or what happened. Entire top of motor taken off and there is nothing loose or broken in there.  The 44mm cylinder is a difficult part to find. Any suggestions are welcome at this point because I'm about to throw it in the river.

  • this just sounds like more to fix than to buy a new one...   I would call Stihl customer service to see if they can offer you at least a discount on a new saw.  Only problem with Stihl is they are very proprietary.   That's the downside but they are great saws overall but like anything else - not without problems since they are mechanical

Sounds like you have a bad crank seal or bad fuel line or something causing it to run to lean.  No way you would go through that many top ends unless straight gassing.

No straight gas. Stihls like their mix a bit rich and that's what I give it

When you say rich is it richer, less oil, than what is recommended by manufacturer?

They like a tad more in the mix.  More oil is rich, less oil is lean. They run hot

Junk it. The new ones are great.

I'm with Tarhunt on this one, unless you like to tinker.

But I'm spoiled.  My Stihl is 30 years old and the only thing I've ever done is replace the spark plug 1 time.  I cut 10+ cords each year and I can't kill this saw.

Im the guy that can't stand to see machinery out at the curb that most likely needs a minor repair. I will put it on the shelf in my shed and keep looking for parts. The lower half is in great shape. My Craftsman 18inch was eating wood like mad last weekend thank God
