Mystery meat a treat at "Critter Dinner"

Pretty cool article on a dinner held in south NJ.

I like the mystery meat idea!

The Fairton Christian Center was filled with almost 300 outdoorsmen for their annual “Critter Dinner.”

I cannot remember all of the wild game they had on three 20-foot tables in the cafeteria.

There was moose, bear, venison roast, venison stew, barbecued venison, venison meatballs, roast duck, goose, pheasant, rabbit, squirrel, quail, muskrat, frogs legs, woodcock, weakfish, striper and a few others. What a feast.

The “Mystery Meat?”

Turned out to be an Alpaca Sheep and two people guessed it right. The Rev. Woodson Moore opened the evening and introduced the speaker Steve Chapman, who has written a half-dozen books on his love of the outdoors.

He sang and told many stories from real-life adventures. Almost forgot — on my plate I had venison, duck, pheasant, squirrel, rabbit, muskrat and the mystery meat. And I ate the whole plate.

This dinner always reminds me of the wild game dinners I used to have at the Meadowood Rod and Gun Club on Union Road. Everyone cooked up whatever wild game they had in their freezer.

We even had the band “Friends” to dance to. Great memories.

n DEER NEWS: I have had quite a few people ask me about this two-headed deer that was supposedly killed in the Salem area by a fellow named Bob Estell, who was up from Florida to visit his parents in Millville.

Now I have seen a picture of this odd deer but haven’t been able to verify it by talking to Mr. Estell, so I would appreciate it if Mr. Estell would get in touch with me.

I was told that young Eddie Adams Jr. of Port Norris had an odd experience. He had shot a 10-point buck in Pennsylvania. When he was dragging it down the mountain, the antlers came off in his hands. He had to go get a rope to drag it down to camp.

Then we have Nelson Thompson, who shot a big deer during Shotgun Permit week. He had been hunting a 10-pointer in the area.

When he went to check it out it had two red spots on its head where the antlers had fallen off. It weighed 179 pounds and he wonders if this was the 10-pointer he was after.

Jason Renyo of Millville told me he shot this deer and when he checked it out something wasn’t right and he discovered it only had one eye!
