not poisonous.   Tell your buddy he could have easily picked it up and cuddled with it...

There are no poisonous snakes in South Carolina.

Or anywhere, there are however several snakes here in Florida that are venomous.

There are two species of venomous snakes in NJ but the one in the photo is not one of them it is a harmless corn snake.

TECHNICALITY.   snakes are not poisonous they are venomeous..  poison dart frogs are poiseness

Would you eat a venomous snake..  yes people eat rattle snake all the time..  now would you eat a poisonous mushroom or plant.. you could but it wont end well..

Venom is not secreted it is injected directly through a wound from fangs or spine..  poison is absorbed or inhaled.. venom can be controlled where as poison being secreted is not..  again I said technicality,  both are toxic.. also on a molecular level vennom and poison are different..  venom has both small and large molecules and as a result need to be injected directly into the blood stream to be effective where poison is all small molecules and can be absorbed inhaled and ingested as well..

Let m set the record straight I do not want to get close to any of them! lol

I couple years ago in Florida while hog hunting a cotton mouth struck at my chest. I was waste deep in water dragging/ floating a hog out.

Not sure if could not reach me or was warning me. I will never forget that white mouth coming towards my chest. 

Glock prevailed but i try to avoid snakes at all costs
