Shot the flintlock for first time...

Recommended Posts

First of all, thank you Nomad for the good deal on the tc flintlock!

It sure is an experience. Measure the powder, then lube bullet, load, then use needle to loosen powder in breech hole, then powder in flash pan, pull hammer back, set trigger, then BOOM!

NOW THE HARD PART...HITTING THE TARGET!!!!

I consider myself to be a decent shot....boy was I humbled today. Tough to group. I definitely am gonna need to practice. My buddies said I was flinching like a sissy.

A lot of fun. Cleaning it was actually easier than expected.

Looking forward to pa flintlock season. Practice makes perfect. I suppose I will appreciate it more doing it this way. Hopefully will see.

What do you mean "like" a sissy??

We all know you get nervous, it's ok.............Or perhaps your phone was distracting you when it was going off seeing where you were! :tooth:

Busting Nick....All good. Like I told you, anything of Nomad's is top notch...Now if he would only start posting pics of his sweet Camaro when he breaks it out of it's garage! Hint, hint! ;)

They make them in a few different weights.  I prefer the 275 grain. But I'm shooting a regular caplock not a flint.

My gun is a 54 cal. I have the tc maxi ball mold. Bullets are 430 grain....if I hit something, it is in trouble. A neat, new Adventure. Pa season is Dec 26-jan 12.

Ouch. That's A LOT of bullet. Consider the roundball. It probably weights over 200 grains.

If you got a PA spot then yeah man go for it. Anytime you can add another hunting option/season that's a plus.

Good luck.

Anyone that says they didn't flinch for the first fifty or so shots is lying   That small explosion going off in front of your eye takes some time to get over.  The first time I shot at a deer with my flintlock the pan went off and I looked over the gun to see if I hit the deer, THEN the gun went off!  I'm guessing the bullet hit eight to ten maybe twenty feet in front of the deer.  I learned quick to use a rest with the flintlock.  I've killed deer with lead bullets, but now it's time to move on.  This years goal is to go strictly patch and ball.

The two older guys I hunt with, one of which I now have his flintlock, use to crack me up with their flintlock stories.  My one buddy said he was sitting on a rock and he saw a deer down the hill.  When he pulled up his gun and aimed the ball rolled out the barrel.

The only tips I have for ya other than using a rest or shooting stick is play with the amount of powder you put in the pan.  It doesn't take much and the less you use the less delay you'll have.  Measure accurately every time and don't lower the gun till ya hear the big bang :tooth:

Always wanted a .36 cal. for squirrels.  Maybe one day.  Also wish I had someone else to shoot with.  Nobody I know is interested
