Do you guys tip?

Recommended Posts

I'm going on an owner operated tarpon fishing trip next week. I'm wondering how many of you guys will tip a owner operator. Obviously I tip first mates but why would I tip an owner operator? I'm only want to hear from people that don't own and operate boats lol. I'm already paying $800. That's already alot of money for a inshore trip.

If you went with an expectation of what you would get for your $800, and your expectations were not met due to something the owner did, then dont tip.

If your expectations were met and say the owner went above and beyond to make your experience a good one, then tip the man for doing a step above what he was paid to do.

I went on a charter boat with jr charters out of shark river a few years ago..

He showed us an amazing time, fun captain to spend the day with. Gave it his all to get us fish- wasnt stingy on gas- did what it took to put us on big stripers.

On the way back in, come up on a school of fish and he waited to give us a other run for another 30-40 mins on the action.

He didnt have to .. our time was up.

My portion of the tab was $200.. I gave him a $50 tip..

My other 3 buddies did the same.. so on the $800 trip we gave him $200 tip.

If he sat us close to home to catch tiny fish and save his gas he would have gotten alot less...

Sometimes the best tip you can give is telling everyone how great the trip was and handing out cards for the owner, but if you can afford it- a $100 bill on $800 is plenty IMO for 1 guy. If theres a few going then each guy can toss in 50-100 if they were pleased with the service..

I can only say that I routinely fish without a mate and the captain is the owner/operator in Cape Cod and I always tip 20 %. I would only tip 20 % IF the captain did the job of the captain & mate. I look forward to my trips each year and have an amazing time. If it's a great time, then tip well.

He's pocketing all the money, so I'd only leave a tip if he went above & beyond (cleans & bags the fish, moves around instead of staying in 1 spot if they're not biting, not a clock-watcher, actually cares if you catch something).

Catch & release is for guys who don't know how to cook. :cook:

I would think no mate no tip, the sign always says please tip the mates. Most captains pay the mates on top of the tips, so if there is no mate why tip the captain he already made his money for the day and then some:up:

How many people for the $800, type of fishing, type of boat, location, etc?  Price already sounds excessive.  I've done private all day charters for tarpon for much less, with great results.

Just me. This price seems to be consistent with most captains in the area unfortunately. Either way, it's booked.
