Coyote study.

Recommended Posts

Interesting.

I donate  $2 to WV coyote control fund every yr when I buy my rifle license....according to this research, it's not needed.

But the researchers do state that they believe yotes can hav an impact on deer populations that are already low......which is what my pal says up in Sussex.....after a recent fresh snow....he hiked a few miles n saw very few deer tracks.  Layton used to be the spot to go in late 80s n early 90s....we used to drive from Pennsy to hunt Jersey seasons.

And did you get him?

I am ashamed. :shakehead: No.

OK, so I need to explain.  The story is this - I have this hen decoy 20 yards from me on private property my friend let's me hunt. Out of nowhere - no warning, sound, nothing - I see this *black* "dog" trot right past it. My immediate thoughts were two fold ... (1) Did my landowner friend get a new dog? (2) Do not shoot somebody's dog and make the news!

So I froze. This coyote (which had totally black fur! So I'm thinking dog - not coyote) turns, lunges at my decoy and knocks it off its stake then runs off. It only took 5 or 10 seconds by the time he came and went. My mind couldn't process it all fast enough to realize it was safe to pull the trigger. Only after did I remember that I had a black coyote on my trail cam here.

The yote was no more than 15 to 20 yards from me too. It was a clear shot. It just happened so fast and the color of it short-circuited my brain. I swear the first thought was that this was someone's pet dog. I was even looking for a collar!

Ahh well... next time I'll be ready! :D

I don't think they make much affect on the deer but think they affect the turkeys more.

I totally disagree. Very few deer around my house and the couple that are stay within the safety of the fence in the yard. Every spring and summer at night you can hear the screaming of the fawn's being torn apart like rag dolls while the mother runs back and forth stamping her feet and snorting up a storm. Seems like the coyotes only show up at my place for the fawn drop between April and August then their gone. They know the mothers leave them in the hay fields. Now I will give you that since my place is wide open only hay fields, the deer probably changed their patterns do to the coyotes and stay in thicker cover somewhere else now, but since the coyotes showed up the deer on my place dropped 10 fold.

And you still can't catch one....:headscratch:
