39 Pound Coyote vs. a Snare

Recommended Posts

The 2 coyotes I caught the other day was a male/female pair. The male was 36 pounds and laying docile when I checked. The female was 39 pounds and jumping around like a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. This is what she did to the snare

Bucndoe what are you normally using for your cable 7x7 ?

Yes, 7x7 3/32 that is all I use. Just personal preference because I make all my snares myself

Yeah they are chewers and have power. Got this female a couple years ago. Was close to chewing outScreenshot_20190302-104836.thumb.jpg.ba51b1afe90474362afe7292c47d5332.jpg

Not chewed at all. That was around her neck behind her ears and twisted like mad. If your coyotes are chewing out, you need to rethink your anchoring system. Once I stopped using earth anchors I never had another chew out again. Give them some room to go away from the catch location and let them chew on a branch instead of your cable

Always amazes me the different reactions they give.  Seems to me the older dogs except their fate and don't fight as much where as the younger dogs go nuts.  I've caught them where there was zero chewing/twisting marks and ones that were so close to being free I couldn't believe they were still there.  JMHO, but the 1x19 seems to hold up to chewing and twisting much better than the 7x7, but then again once I switched over I never used the 7x7 again, except for groundhogs.

Also, a lot of cable damage due to twisting can be prevented by adding a swivel.

Look at the pics. There is a swivel on the end of the snare and a second one that it was attached to

No earth anchor. Tied off to a tree. It was against a big tree and nothing really for her  to tangle in. I know to make the coyote snares longer than fox to help get that done. I don't get many coyotes around my area so I have not had many chances at them but I have done good with the ones that came on the farm. Caught all the ones I had on camera.
