Deer Minerals

What are you using? I am looking to maintain two sites this summer and would like to find some product that is decent and affordable. Some are just loaded with salt some with "candies" and some are just crazy expensive. Maybe looking for something good and not expensive is like looking for a skinny fat man but there is so much out there I am hoping to get some advise. (I am not looking to mix my own)
Thanks
L

There was a thread the other day you nut about this. It’s not guaranteed to work it’s hit or miss product and location from what I have learned and from what others say.

Minerals are funny- can work great in 1 spot and go moldy and untouched in another a few hundred yards away.

That being said- I've had less lick with the higher end minerals like a&w and lucky buck, and better luck with mixing my own.

I believe a&w to have a good quality for a decent $. I would try this first. If it doesnt get hit- move it before giving up.

You want it near a major run and near water.

You can find decent, but not affordable when it comes to commercial products.  If I didn't want to mix my own and wasn't worried about the bank, I would just buy Trophy Rocks myself.  But at $18 each and needing to be replenished often during the year, that is expensive for maintaining two sites.  Mix your own and $60 will take care of two sites for 12 months easily.  I realize you aren't looking to do that, but that is the reason so many of us do it.  And the mix is a proven one and will bring in deer year after year once you find a good place for a site.  Mix your own and you control both the quality and the price.

This post reminded me I have to pick up my minerals on way home tonight.  I ordered DiCal, trace minerals and stock salt and molasses last week.  I’ve had success mixing my own minerals - 250 pounds for about $60).  My mineral sites are hit by deer from April to about August or September.  Not sure if DiCal does anything for me but I use it.

Thanks guys

As I look at this I am beginning to think I need to mix my own.

The first time you do it, you will laugh at how easy and cheap it is.  I carry in a spackle bucket at a time for each site maybe 3Xs/year or two buckets twice a year.  They can be great to put a camera over without a big, yellow pile of corn standing out from 300 yards away making your sites so obvious.  I do recommend starting a new site with granulated molasses as the deer seem to hit the site quicker that way.

I don't bait and once September gets here any camera I may use goes on scrapes, licks, pinch points and deer trails. (I never liked cameras because I felt the additional trips to check on them pushed mature deer out. However; I bought this year two cell cams so my trips will be limited to maybe one/months with pictures delivered directly to my cell phone)
Minerals are for deer and with camera its just a fun and easy way to get an inventory of what you have before the season starts .
My best friend has been mixing for years and I talk to him today. He will buy what I need and I will just pay, it can't get any easier:up: He does use dry molasses in his mix, although I don't think my deer will need it to find the site.
