EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, New Jersey — Authorities are working to identify the remains of a woman that were in a suitcase found by an off-duty police officer in southern New Jersey.

Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain says the officer was hunting in a wooded area of Egg Harbor Township when he found the remains around 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The officer's name and the police department he works for were not disclosed.

The remains were collected by the state Medical Examiner's Office, which will conduct an autopsy. Authorities say the woman's age and race have not yet been determined

Prosecutors say the woman's death is being investigated as a homicide. Due to the advanced decomposition of the remains, a state medical anthropologist will assist with the investigation.
