Maine Moose Tag Lottery is OPEN

Recommended Posts

Got my Maine moose lottery email earlier.

Dreaming of the hunt of a lifetime? We are pleased to announce that the 2019 Maine moose permit lottery application process is now open.

Applications for the moose permit lottery will be accepted online only.

The online application process is fast and simple and you receive instant confirmation that you have successfully entered the lottery.

To apply online, go to mefishwildlife.com and fill out the online moose permit application. There, you will be able to indicate several preferences, including which wildlife management districts (WMD) you are willing to accept a permit in, and if you would accept a permit in another WMD if your name is drawn and all of your top choices are filled. You will also be able to select your preferred hunting season, whether or not you would accept an antlerless permit, and your choice of a sub-permittee.

The deadline to apply for the lottery is 11:59 p.m. on May 15, 2019.

Applicants are awarded bonus points for each consecutive year that they have applied for the lottery since 1998 without being selected and each bonus point gives the applicant an additional chance in the drawing. Bonus points are earned at the rate of one per year for years one to five, two per year for years six to 10, three per year for years 11 to 15 and 10 per year for years 16 and beyond. Since 2011, applicants can skip a year and not lose their bonus points. So if you applied in 2017 but not in 2018, you will still have your points available if you apply in 2019.

Want to be there for the drawing? The 2019 moose lottery permit drawing will take place at Cabela’s in Scarborough, Maine on June 8, 2019.

Did you know that they took about 50 permits that would normally have gone to non residents and sold them to sport lodges for $1,500 each?  Now the lodges are auctioning them off to hunters.  Starting bid at one place was $7,000 and they will probably go for between $15,000 and $20,000.

Wasn't aware of that, but since your family has a great record of harvesting moose in ME, you know how awesome that experience is.  Not worth $20K to me, but I'll throw my hat in the ring each year to see if I get lucky.  I also do NH.  Knowing my luck, I'll draw both states the same year.

New Brunswick Canada. Much better odds.

I try not to bring guns into Canadia, but I'm all ears if you have a story or experience with the NB lottery.  Would love to learn more.

I have been lucky enough to have drawn in Maine twice for moose. The first time I ever put in, I put one chance in and got drawn. I almost didn’t go until I found out how hard it was to draw. I then decide to put in three years after my first tag and I drew again. It can happen. I now have 14 points in New Hampshire, 5 points in Maine and I have been applying to New Brunswick for about 6 or 7 years but haven’t drawn. I actually hope every year that I don’t get drawn until my son is old enough to go with me. I took my father with me when I drew and he had the time of his life. That was his only guided hunt he went on and passed away shortly after. I will never forget that trip. I hope to make those kind of memories with son one day.

I'll stick with cheaper hunting. I doubt I'll ever go on big game hunt besides whitetail. Best of luck though

Probably one of the cheapest quality "big game" hunts that you can go on.  Sure, the license is about 600 total , but then you can just drive up there with a friend or two and hunt.   Kill, the moose and bring it back.

Sure, there are some additional costs in there also, but still not too bad, if you don't get a guide, butcher it yourself, and just put the rack on a plaque.
