Anyone bring their dog trapping

Recommended Posts

I plan on purchasing a yellow lab pup in spring. He will be well trained by next winter hopefully as I plan on working many hours with him. He will be be by my side for all hunting and fishing adventures. I can foresee some issues bringing him along trapping. Question do any of u bring your dog trapping? I don't do any beaver trapping so no worry about a konibear set. Is there any usefulness to bringing a dog trapping. First thought would be scent left from dog would deter other animals? I would just hate to exclude him from this.

I move fast and am checking a large number of traps in different spots. It would slow me down. I would also worry about him running ahead and getting stuck in a loop. Just wouldn't work for me

Growing up I had a line of close to 100 traps , I had an Airedale Terrier that was without doubt my best friend . We shared every day experiences with each other . He quickly learned about traps and what we were doing . When he passed it was never the same and I stopped trapping. So yea take that pup with you and enjoy the memories!

I was trapping my yard and would take my dog out for a walk every morning to check traps.
My woods are wide open, not much cover, and would have been hard to find trails without her. I'd see her get on a scent and start following it.. wherever she found interesting smells I hung 12 loops and caught 8 fox in a few weeks here. As I caught fox I removed the snares I didnt reset.
I owe alot of that success to her showing me trails that otherwise didnt look like anything.

Also- the wind blows towards my house and ever morning she would wind check and I could tell right from the front yard if we had anything from her reaction.. and sure enough we would walk into the woods and every morning that she was smelling excited we had a fox.

Then there were the few times she got clumsy and knocked my loops down lol.

Nice all valid points. I guess it all comes down to discipline which he will have as I do plan on working extensively. He may prove useful but more than anything it’s just more time together and healthy exercise for him. I’ve made a few inquiries but anyone who knows a breeder of yellow labs feel free to pm me.  Although I don’t pheasant hunt I do plan on doing some gun dog training just to work on hunting behavior and discipline.

Yes, Just lost my last trapline dog Friday. The first and ONLY time he went up to the paved road. I'm having a VERY hard time of it. Lost other dogs before. But I don't ever rember their lost felt so bad. Guess they did. My dogs are my best friend. At my side all day. Even at night.

Schackles, was the best trapline dog. You couldn't catch her in a snare. Did a lot of beaver and turtle work in North Carolina when I had her.

Abe ,who just died Friday was very good on fox. He would pee where ever they did. I sure miss him. I'm all teared up writing this.

Sorry to hear newt. I had a lab that would run my line with me. I would let her out and she would take off run the whole line before I could gather equipment. If I had something she would sit and bark till I got there.  She passed 5 years ago still debating on getting another.
